The story of survival, lessons learned, and the plane that saved my life.

It was a cloudy Saturday morning, and I was up early. I had a trip scheduled to fly from Boca Raton to Marathon Key to pick up the owner of the Aerostar and fly the family to North Carolina. I had checked the weather and saw a line of thunderstorms stretching across the state. In hindsight, I should have cancelled the trip and stayed in bed.
I took off around 8:30 and flew west, trying to find a way to turn south around the storm system. Unable to find an opening, I turned back east, and knowing the tops were around 10,000 feet, I decided to climb over the storm. At 13,500 feet, I leveled out and saw what looked like an opening South. After a couple of minutes, the opening closed up, and I had a bad feeling and decided to do a 180 to turn around. In a steep right turn and at a high rate of speed, I hit a cell, and suddenly I was out of control, pushed straight down wide open.
I pulled the power back and slowly pulled the nose up so the wings wouldn't separate, and the Aerostar came out of the high-speed dive and leveled out, and that is when I impacted the ground, gear up, and slid 75 yards before it came to a stop. I was able to climb out, wanting to get away from the airplane in case of fire. Furthermore, I realized that I had injured my back on impact and couldn't walk.
So I crawled away in the mud for about 50 feet, turned around, and gave thanks that I had survived. It was a miracle, and I thank God daily for being there for me. It was a profound moment, and it changed my life forever. The Aerostar is an amazing airplane and built very strong. I credit it with saving my life. Three years ago, I found it in a salvage yard in Missouri. I bought the left wing and started making arrowhead pendants. They are very special to me because they are part of the airplane that saved my life. Always wear one for continued good fortune. I will always be forever grateful to be alive.
